THE BRIEF: TELLING THE STORY OF NATURE OVER TIME

The client sought to showcase how Egypt’s natural landscape has transformed over millennia. The aim was to create a visual narrative focusing primarily on the evolution of nature, with humanity’s impact playing a secondary role.

This vision guided the entire creative process, leading to the construction of a journey through space and time, blending documented reality with AI-recreated imaginings.

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE LANDSCAPES OF TIME

“Paesaggi – Landscapes” is a project born from the collaboration between the Museo Egizio in Turin and Robin Studio with an ambitious goal:
to capture the essence of the Egyptian landscape, narrating its evolution through an immersive experience.

The project involved nearly a month of intensive on-site activities, with trips to Egypt between January and March 2024, followed by a production phase that concluded in June of the same year.

Traversing Egypt from Hamamia and Gebelein to Luxor and Aswan, the team gathered an impressive amount of visual and digital data: 8K video footage, 3D scans, aerial drone recordings, and field audio.

These elements became the foundation for an immersive room at the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin, offering visitors a unique and engaging multisensory experience.

CHALLENGES BETWEEN PAST AND FUTURE

The project presented several challenges. Logistics in Egypt, for instance, imposed restrictions on the use of personal equipment, necessitating careful local rentals.

Drone footage had to be captured later, requiring precise planning to ensure visual consistency.

Creating 3D models and integrating them with advanced CGI techniques, such as Gaussian Splat, posed further technical hurdles.

A critical moment occurred during the testing phase when the team realized that rapid movements and transitions in the visuals caused discomfort among viewers. This led to a complete rethinking of the narrative pacing, slowing sequences to ensure a smoother and more enveloping experience.

THE MAGIC OF MULTIDISCIPLINARITY

What made “Landscapes” truly special was the seamless blend of innovative technologies and creative approaches.

The work combined 8K footage, ultra-high-resolution 3D scans, a 16.1 immersive audio system, and generative AI to reconstruct lost landscapes and eras.

The immersive experience unfolded across four projection walls, each depicting a segment of the overall panorama. This setup allowed the team to manage a visual output of an astounding 27,000 pixels, making possible what would have been technically unfeasible with a single system.

The result was a collective narrative that intertwined historical documentation with imaginative storytelling, bridging the gap between reality and the dreamlike.

THE IMPACT OF A UNIQUE STORYTELLING

The immersive environment created offered audiences a journey through Egypt, both past and present.

The rich visuals, multidirectional audio, and AI-generated content evoked deep emotions: wonder, curiosity, and amazement.

The combination of real ambient sounds and digital reconstructions enveloped viewers in a total sensory experience, transforming the Egyptian landscape into a realm of the soul.

The audience’s response was overwhelmingly positive, confirmed by strong ticket sales and media attention.
Articles, reviews, and social media posts amplified the allure of a project that goes beyond storytelling, inviting people to live an era in an extraordinarily modern way.
